A Billabong is a pond, that doesn't get any new influx in the dry-time, and doesn't have any drain. The water "stands" and mybe not exchanged within several months. Only at the next rain-time, new water adds over the previously dried up riverbeds. A Billabong can be important für plants and animals.

The term Billabong is originated in the language of the Wiradhuri a group of the Australian natives in New South Wales.
