The original people of the Koori never existed. The name Koori (meaning "people") is the name of lots of different groups of indigenous people syndicating to a community in their despair.

The people were the members of five tribes in the southeast of Australia. The tribes were named Kulin, Mara, Kurnai, Yaitmathang and Wotjobaluk. Altogether it was a number of 38 seperate internal groups speakting their own language and lived in the regions of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.

The constant threat of the white people forced the natives to join the community of the Koori. The time of the syndicating is unknown. A small group of the Koori is still living today.
